Assistant Controller – Manufacturing

A growing Grand Rapids manufacturer is hiring an Assistant Controller to lead month-end close, financial reporting, and the integration of newly acquired businesses.

A growing, multi-location manufacturing organization in the Grand Rapids area. Its corporate accounting team supports an acquisitive business and works on a hybrid schedule, with two to three days a week in the office.

The opportunity

The Assistant Controller works closely with the Controller and plays an important role in month-end close, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, and the accounting integration of newly acquired businesses.

This is a great fit for an accounting professional who enjoys a mix of hands-on accounting, financial analysis, and process improvement, and who is comfortable in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Key responsibilities
  • Support month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations

  • Maintain a strong understanding of the general ledger and ensure accurate financial reporting

  • Prepare financial reporting packages, management reports, variance analyses, and ad hoc analyses

  • Manage fixed asset accounting and support inventory analysis and reconciliations

  • Review AP and AR activity for accuracy and completeness, and support payroll-related accounting as needed

  • Analyze financial results to identify trends, variances, risks, and opportunities

  • Assist with annual audits, tax reporting packages, 1099 filings, and property tax reporting

  • Support lease accounting under ASC 842

  • Assist with the accounting integration of newly acquired businesses

  • Participate in ERP implementations, system transitions, and accounting process improvement initiatives

Ideal profile
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field

  • 6–8+ years of progressive general ledger, financial reporting, or related accounting experience

  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and advanced Microsoft Excel skills

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Accounting experience within a manufacturing, distribution, or multi-location organization

  • Experience supporting acquisitions or integrating newly acquired businesses

  • ERP implementation, upgrade, or system conversion experience

  • ASC 842 lease accounting experience

  • Experience within a private equity-backed or high-growth organization

Compensation & benefits

This position offers a $100,000 to $125,000 base salary plus a 10% annual bonus, on a hybrid schedule with approximately two to three days per week in the Grand Rapids office.
